Report of workshop presented at the American Jail Association Annual Training A Conference, Salt Lake City, Utah, May 20, 1997
Abstract
The resources include space, equipment and furnishings, materials and supplies, staff, workers, time, and information and expertise. Jail managers were advised to take three steps: (1) assess specific resource needs and describe them in detail, (2) consider the approaches described in the workshop, and (3) review the suggested funding sources and approaches if resources were not obtained by other means. Specific actions recommended included using space for multiple purposes, extending hours of operation for some spaces, using government surplus space, obtaining donations of equipment from community organizations, using salvaged equipment, borrowing equipment, obtaining items from pawn shops, and using volunteers and retired persons for staff. Additional lists of suggestions and form on which to suggest more strategies or to order the finished product from the workshop
