Before schools can develop sound educational programs of drug prevention, they must first acknowledge the drug use problem. Health education classes based on realistic and dynamic programs of instruction can serve as effective deterrents to drug use by students. Close cooperation and planning are essential to a well-designed drug prevention program. School administrators must be willing to give the necessary time, while teachers must be willing to plan and work in their own individual areas of instruction. The following content resources are identified for planning a drug prevention program within an existing curriculum framework: art, business, driver education and training, English, health education, home economics, music, physical education, science, and social studies. Procedures for initiating an educational drug prevention program are outlined, and the importance of program evaluation is noted. An example of program objectives and evaluation is offered as a guide to program development. 4 references and 1 figure
