Each juvenile receives a comprehensive risk and needs assessment that determines the individual treatment plan and placement status. Youths then go to the appropriate program or facility that provides optimal care and supervision in the least restrictive manner. Community liaison councils that inform local citizens about the facility's programs and address community concerns are crucial to the success of DYS programs. Youths at many DYS sites also volunteer at local service organizations and have joined local youth programs. The juvenile court diversion program aims to provide early intervention and prevention. DYS community services include case management, intensive case monitoring, family therapy, a jobs program, alternative living services, and day treatment. Residential services include secure care, moderate care, group homes, and units for special needs and short-term care.
