This leaflet contains information about claiming benefits after release from prisons in England, specifically information on what benefits can be claimed, how and where to claim benefits, and what inmates should do before and after release to claim benefits.
Abstract
The main benefit for most inmates is income support or unemployment benefits. Being on income support means inmates are automatically eligible to claim other benefits, including help with housing costs, crisis and budget loans, community care grants, family credits, child benefits, and health care. The Department of Social Security runs the benefits system. If inmates are unemployed or are working less than 16 hours a week, they must go to an Employment Service Job Center. If inmates are working but have a low income, or if they are unable to work, they can claim benefits directly from the Department of Social Security's Benefits Agency. Inmates who anticipate they will be homeless upon release should ensure prison staff know about this problem. If inmates plan to claim income support upon release and need to buy such things as furniture and clothing, they can apply for a community care grant 6 weeks before release. After release, inmates should make their benefits claims as soon as possible. Specific procedures for claiming benefits, particularly with respect to child care and ability to work, are described. Sources of further information and advice for inmates are noted.
