This report provides statistical data on institutional and parole populations in California as of January 1995 and January 1996 and information on the racial-ethnic distribution of these groups.
Abstract
The male institutional population totaled 117,872 in January 1995 and 127,442 in January 1996. Corresponding numbers for the female institutional population were 8,268 and 9,265. In January 1996, the number of new prison admissions totaled 12,611, while the number of inmates released from prison totaled 11,053. Detailed data are presented on new prison admissions for felons and civil addicts; parole returns and transfers; admission and return status of inmates by institution; ethnic composition of inmates by institution, sex, and commitment type; and parole population movements.
