Statistics in this fiscal year 1996-1997 annual report on the Tennessee judiciary indicate more than 136,000 civil cases and more than 128,000 criminal cases were filed in trial courts.
Abstract
Tennessee officials have responded to the growing caseload by authorizing eight new trial judgeships beginning in 1998. The courts are also doing their part to address the problem of scarce judicial resources by working more efficiently and encouraging the use of alternative dispute resolution. The organization of Tennessee's judicial system is illustrated, with a map of judicial districts included. Information is provided on the Administrative Office of the Courts (court services, finance and personnel, statistical services and indigent defense, and technology divisions) and on the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, and the Court of Criminal Appeals. A court system directory and brief summaries of judicial boards and commissions are included. Detailed data are tabulated on court filings and dispositions, damages and torts, and domestic violence.
