Title: Applicability of Western Police Experiences: Desires and Possibilities From the Viewpoint of Slovenian Police (From Policing in Central and Eastern Europe: Comparing Firsthand Knowledge With Experience From the West, P 85-91, 1996, Milan Pagon, ed. -- See NCJ-170291)
Document: HTML
Author(s): A Dvorsek
Date Published: 1996
Annotation: This paper identifies those areas in which Western European police experiences can be constructively used by the Slovenian police.
Abstract: The value of the transfer of foreign experiences for Slovenian police work can best be seen in the area of forensic research. Slovenia's Forensic Research Lab Centre is connected to leading European forensic laboratories through the European network of forensic labs. This lab conducts demanding forensic research under the West European standards, and then it exchanges the results and experiences with Western European states. The transfer of knowledge and experiences in the area of suppression of various types of international organized crime is also effective. The timely introduction of methods of covert investigation enable the Slovenian police to deter the further growth of organized crime. Community crime prevention has also benefited from the transfer of foreign experiences. The transfer of foreign experiences has been less successful in the areas of personnel selection, police management, and police strategies. This is due largely to recent changes toward the application of democratic principles in Slovenia. In the future, Slovenian police will give attention to the quick transfer of skills and experience that will facilitate their incorporation in various Western associations.
