This manual presents background information, guidelines, a 10-session curriculum, and materials to assist professionals in establishing and conducting groups in schools and other settings for adolescent males ages 13-19 who are perpetrators of dating violence or are at high risk.
Abstract
The manual begins with an overview of the nature and extent of adolescent dating violence, with emphasis on the similarities and differences between this form of violence and other domestic assault. It also discusses the nature of abusive relationships, presents a profile of a perpetrator, and lists signs that a youth is at risk of perpetrating teen dating violence. The steps involved in setting up groups and developing an intake procedure are then explained. Group structure is explained with respect to the facilitators' goals, the group format and agenda, setting goals, the use of videos and field trips, achievement celebration, reasons for termination, and individual counseling. The 10-part curriculum focuses on the nature of violence, negative and positive self talk, the impacts of violence, mental or emotional abuse, verbal abuse, constructive communication, anger control, and other topics. The goals and content of group exercises for each topic are explained. The final section presents recommendations for schools, including the development of a comprehensive response to teen dating violence, the development of school policies, awareness training for the school community, intervention and resource services, and promoting an appropriate school climate. Appended checklists, forms, sample letters, and related materials
