These 27 papers examine issues related to child and youth development and problems in the United Kingdom and discuss ways to enhance young people's sense of social responsibility and participation in society.
Abstract
The papers are intended for courses on youth and social work, youth and community work, youth and criminal justice, and the sociology of youth. The discussions emphasize that the period of youth is one of personal, social, legal, and political transitions and that youth have opportunities during these transitions to become actively involved in shaping the decisions that will influence their future. The papers also focus on ways in which adult society needs to rethink youth so that such opportunities can be created and sustained. Themes and issues include the rights of minors; citizenship, participation, and empowerment; racial issues; sexuality and sexual behavior; education and training; youth homelessness; child abuse and neglect; social difference and social identity; images of youth; youth and the politics of service provision; communication between youth and adults; and working with youth in different contexts.
