This report provides information and financial data on the programs sponsored by the various bureaus and offices of the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Justice Programs (OJP) for fiscal year 1998.
Abstract
This report announces the establishment of a new office within OJP: the Office for State and Local Domestic Preparedness Support. In fiscal year 1998 Congress appropriated $16 million to the Attorney General to assist State and local public safety personnel in acquiring equipment and specialized training to respond safely to and manage domestic terrorist incidents, especially those dealing with chemical and biological agents and explosives. This report also describes current fiscal year appropriation levels and funding programs of OJP and its components; who can apply for OJP grants; an updated status of program regulations, guidelines, reports, application kits, and grant awards; a chart that shows State-by-State estimates or final allocations under OJP fiscal year 1998 formula-based programs; and an OJP organizational chart. The Office of Justice Programs, the Justice Department's primary source of financial and other assistance for State and local criminal justice initiatives, received its full fiscal year 1998 appropriations on November 26, 1997, under Public Law 105-119. OJP is committed to expediting the grant award process whenever possible and continues to work in partnership with all applicants to address crime and violence.
