This article examines the issue of security for online data.
Abstract
In order to combat crime in the new information age, law enforcement agencies must be able to rapidly access information that could be vital to both officers and victims. Extranets are the latest online communications tool designed to facilitate information-sharing between organizations. They could be used to keep track of a State's parolees and to share that information with law enforcement agencies around the country; to keep a record of visitors to a correctional institution so other correctional institutions could use the data; and to maintain an accounting of convicted sex offenders and known gang members. As more correctional facilities go online, system protection becomes extremely important. The article suggests actions to ensure data security and defenses against network intruders and unauthorized access: (1) one-time passwords; (2) Keystone server deployment; (3) e-mail encryption; (4) firewall/DMZ implementations; (5) exposure analysis/auditing; and (6) real-time monitoring, among others.
