Section I describes the steps required to apply the new sentencing laws. The steps are to determine the offense class for each felony conviction; determine the prior record level for the offender; consider aggravating and mitigating factors; select a minimum sentence from the appropriate minimum sentence range; determine the maximum sentence; and determine the sentence disposition. The alternatives in the latter step are to impose an active punishment, impose an intermediate punishment, or impose a community punishment. Section II describes additional sentencing provisions. These involve life without parole, habitual felons, violent habitual felons, committed youthful offenders, appellate review, parole release, and offense change.
