Several successful programs have been implemented in Texas to prevent violence in schools and to allow local schools to identify what works best for their students.
Abstract
Successful programs include Communities in Schools and Safe House. Youth summits have been convened to discuss violence prevention strategies. A progressive model for dealing with juvenile offenders has been developed jointly by the Texas Youth Commission and the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission. This program ensures a consequence each time a young person commits a criminal act and is structured to balance public protection, rehabilitation, and offender accountability. Legislative and program initiatives to curb violence in Texas schools are discussed, including Mayors United on Safety, Crime, and Law Enforcement and the Violent Crimes Task Force. Other community- based violence prevention programs are also described. 42 notes
