The book includes an overview of the history of intervention, from its development as a family intervention model to its present application in medical, legal, and employment situations. The chapters discuss: (1) the physician's perspective, warning signs, how to assess symptoms, how to initiate the conversation with the patient, and overcoming resistance to referral; (2) developing response-specific intervention strategies; (3) performance-related workplace interventions; (4) peer and administrative interventions; (5) early intervention for substance abusing adolescents; (6) intervention as brief, structured family therapy; (7) changes in the criminal justice system that have encouraged judges to refer individuals to treatment in addition to any punishment; and (8) opportunities for intervention in the One-Stop Reemployment Social Services Center, federally supported, multiagency centers that share information and work as a team to assist individuals and motivate them to seek appropriate treatment.
