Various activities are held annually to commemorate the deaths of police officers killed in the line of duty, including National Police Week, Peace Officers Memorial Day, National Police Survivors Seminars, and Annual National Police Officers Memorial Day Service.
Abstract
In 1996, 116 names were added to the memorial wall at the National Law Enforcement Officers Visitors Center, the fewest number of police officers killed in the line of duty in a single year since 1959. An additional 138 names were inscribed to recognize police officers who died in previous years. The names were added at a candlelight vigil that was attended by more than 10,000 police officers, surviving family members, and police supporters. Funded exclusively by private contributions, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial stands as a permanent reminder of the extraordinary service and sacrifice provided daily by police officers. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has also honored 156 police officers killed in the line of duty. This program is administered through the IACP's Division of State Associations of Chiefs of Police.
