Outcome measures for program graduates include educational progress, employment placement and subsequent criminal activity within 1 year of release from the program. The report also compares outcomes for program graduates with an equivalent group of juveniles released from other Department of Juvenile Justice programs. Major findings include: (1) Sixty-three of the 66 recruits admitted in the first five platoons graduated, two had been removed for medical problems, and one for psychological problems; (2) The typical graduate was a 16-year-old male; (3) Eighty-one percent were black; (4) Graduates averaged 11.3 delinquency cases before boot camp admission; (5) As a group, graduates increased approximately one grade level in reading and more than one grade in math and language; (6) Sixty-seven percent of graduates successfully completed aftercare; and (7) Statistics on rearrest, re-adjudication or conviction on new charges for boot camp graduates do not differ significantly from a matched comparison group of 63 youths released from other moderate and high-risk residential commitment programs.
