This article reports on the activities of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), an 8,000-member worldwide not-for-profit organization, in its effort to prevent arson fires in American churches.
Abstract
Representatives of the IAAI have worked closely with the Clinton administration in addressing the problem of arson fires in churches. In cooperation with the Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company of Grinnell, Iowa, the IAAI has produced an arson prevention pamphlet for America's churches and synagogues. The IAAI will send a representative to provide a 2- to 4-hour program on arson prevention to any church or synagogue that requests it. The IAAI also offers nationwide arson prevention workshops for church leaders. IAAI is committed to facilitate the efforts of the Insurance Committee on Arson Control's nationwide on-site inspections of churches by insurance industry loss-prevention specialists. The president of IAAI and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have written to the 9,000 largest police departments in the United States, soliciting support for the Church Arson Prevention Program. The letter includes the latest information on the problem and some suggestions for holding a church seminar in local police jurisdictions. Guidance is provided for scheduling a workshop for church leaders.
