The first National Conference on Preventing Crime was hosted by the National Crime Prevention Council and brought 1,200 law enforcement officers, government leaders, community organizers, activists, educators, business leaders, and religious leaders to Washington, D.C. on October 13-15, 1997.
Abstract
The participants discussed and celebrated successful prevention initiatives. They also emphasized that prevention efforts are essential to controlling crime and must become a public priority on the local, State, and national levels. Presenters urged participants to continue their efforts; involve youth in programs; and promote collaborations among community residents, police, other government agencies, businesses, schools, and religious groups. Presentations focused on crime prevention from a public health perspective, issues related to advocacy and lobbying, successful interagency and public-private partnerships, and the role of after-school and youth employment programs. The 70 workshops focused on gangs; guns; drugs; domestic assault; adolescent dating violence; cultural diversity; the Internet; community policing; crime prevention in immigrant communities; and what businesses, schools, religious institutions, and governments can do to prevent crime and juvenile delinquency.
