This report provides an overview of national datasets that can be used to satisfy Federal legislation that requires the National Center for Education Statistics to collect data to determine the frequency, seriousness, and incidence of violence in elementary and secondary schools.
Abstract
The data will be used to evaluate the impact of Federal programs and initiatives designed to prevent violence in schools. The national datasets include Monitoring the Future for 1994 and 1995, sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse; the Schools and Staffing Survey for 1994, sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics; the National Crime Victimization Survey, sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Statistics; and five other datasets. The report describes the information related to school crime and violence presented in the datasets and, when possible, assesses the quality of that information. The report also discusses the strengths and weaknesses of a report to Congress based on the most recently collected data and presents recommendations for developing a survey system designed to collect rigorous and detailed information on crime and violence in schools. Tables, footnotes, and appended tables and discussions of each dataset
