Prior research in the sequencing of intersecting strokes has considered the development and testing of different techniques in an effort to observe and record physical evidence of the order of intersecting written and/or mechanically printed entries. These earlier studies, however, fail to take advantage of the valuable information offered through a study of the color of the two crossing strokes in question. Therefore, the current study determines sequencing by such methods as stereo microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and other physical and chemical methods and develops a novel approach that uses chromaticity measurements and clustering techniques. The main advantage of the new method is that it not only includes the physical evidence observed at the point of intersection but also combines the quantitative chromaticity information analyzed by clustering techniques. If traditional methods of microscopy and the new method are integrated to examine sequence strokes on a questioned document, the reliability of examination results improve and become more objective. 17 references and 9 figures
