Abstract
During 1996, police agencies in Texas arrested 184,284 juveniles between the ages of 10 and 17. Of this number, 70,216 were warned and released, handled in justice and municipal courts or diverted, and 114,068 were referred to juvenile probation departments. A total of 2,111 juvenile probation officers in 163 departments covered all of Texas's 254 counties. In addition, there were 367 residential placement officers, and 752 certified plus 758 part-time or on-call detention staff to assist in supervising juveniles held in the State's 61 juvenile detention facilities. During the year, 50,986 juveniles were detained prior to adjudication hearings; 48,874 were held in secure juvenile detention centers and 2,112 in non-secure alternate placement facilities such as foster homes and emergency shelters. An additional 1,752 could have been held in non-secure facilities if such facilities had been available. The report includes data on juvenile referral, detention and disposition activity, supervision workload activity, and a glossary of juvenile justice terminology. Figures, tables, appendix
