The report includes a summary of 1993 emergency department drug abuse episode and mention estimates for the total coterminous United States, metropolitan area estimates of 1993 emergency department drug abuse episodes and drug mentions, and trends in estimated numbers of emergency department drug abuse episodes and drug mentions 1990-1993. Patients 6 to 17 years old accounted for 11 percent of emergency department drug abuse episodes, those 18 to 25 accounted for 21 percent, and those 26 or older accounted for 67 percent. Suicide was the motive for drug use in 39 percent of the episodes. Overdose was the reason for the emergency department visit in 53 percent of all DAWN episodes. The metropolitan areas with the greatest numbers of drug-related emergency department visits were New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Chicago. Drug-related emergency department visits in the US increased 6 percent, from 433,493 in 1992 to 460,910 in 1993. Tables, notes, appendixes
