When upgrading or adding security systems to any building or facility, security personnel often fail to include facility managers in the planning phase and do not always understand modifications to building structures and security systems must be integrated.
Abstract
By not recognizing the overlap of security and facility management functions, security managers deprive themselves of technical expertise that can prove invaluable to the success of an installation or an upgrade. The facility manager has good working knowledge of the building and its components and can provide information that may affect the design of an access control system. In addition, the facility manager can help ensure compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act. A case example is provided to illustrate the beneficial role of the facility manager in security upgrades.
