Abstract
After discussing the measurement of crime, the booklet's section on "Crime" provides New South Wales' crime data from crime victim surveys, crimes known to police, and crime location. The second section of the booklet provides data on selected offenses, namely, drug offenses, homicide, assault, sex offenses, breaking and entering, robbery, and motor vehicle theft and stealing from motor vehicles. The section on criminal courts profiles the structure of New South Wales' criminal justice system and trends in criminal court appearances. Statistics also cover the age of offenders, court workload, court delay, bail, plea, proven offender rates, appeals, sentencing, imprisonment, and life sentences. Data pertinent to prisons was obtained from the New South Wales Prison Census conducted in June 1995. The data address the legal status of prisoners, the most serious offense/charge, inmate characteristics, sentence lengths, and trends in prison population. The final section, which covers the cost of criminal justice in New South Wales, presents the recurrent and capital works expenditure for 1995-96. Extensive graphic data and 29 references
