This report presents statistics on the demographic characteristics and criminal histories of 7,987 inmates who were in New York State prisons on October 26, 1996 and who had served or would continuously serve at least 15 years of imprisonment.
Abstract
Thirty-five percent of long-term inmates were age 40 years or older, compared to 19 percent of inmates sentenced to less than 15 years. Inmates who were noted as white or black were proportionately overrepresented in the long-term inmate population when compared to other inmates. A total of 97.6 percent of the long-term inmates were males and 2.4 percent were females. Fifty-three percent of the long-term inmates and 44 percent of the other inmates were high school graduates. More than 63 percent of long-term inmates had already served 5 or more years of their current sentence. Sixty percent had at least 10 years remaining of their sentence. Nearly 10 percent had 25 years or more left to serve before they would become eligible for parole. Tables
