Abstract
The article, based on evaluation research in Kentucky and Ohio, suggests ways researchers can begin to work with practitioners in the kind of research that can have a positive influence on the field: (1) incorporate design mechanisms for determining the degree to which counseling is or is not influencing the "inmate code"; (2) establish and maintain rapport with correctional administrators, treatment staff and program participants; (3) be aware of both manifest and latent goals; (4) do not get caught up in departmental politics and remain ethical in the presentation of findings; (5) collaborate with others conducting evaluations; (6) be flexible in research designs; and (7) be aware of opportunities to extend research design and questions to include basic as well as evaluative research. The article describes the Kentucky men's and women's programs and provides an overview of the Ohio program. References
