The first lesson helps students explore their attitudes about substance abuse, followed by a lesson that introduces students to the hypothetical Jackson Middle School; students examine a series of incidents involving substance abuse at the school; the class determines what effects these incidents might have on students, teachers, administrators, parents, and other community residents. In the third lesson, students begin to understand the scope of the national problem of substance abuse in the schools. Students examine statistical data related to substance abuse in the United States in the fourth lesson. In the fifth lesson, students identify the school's responsibilities in maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment, enforcing the law, protecting individual rights, and protecting the welfare of the community. Other lessons consider what makes a good rule, how the class can develop a substance abuse prevention plan for the Jackson Middle School, how to share the plan with others in the community, and how to evaluate what students learned from the program. The student manual provides information and exercises for each lesson, and the teacher's guide provides specific instructions for teaching each of the nine lessons.
