A program used to teach adolescents in Georgia about alcohol and driving was evaluated using information from students in five school systems in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas.
Abstract
The Teams, Games, and Tournaments (TGT) program was developed through extensive research on games as teaching devices, the use of small groups as classroom work units, and emphasis on the task-and-reward structures used in the traditional classroom. It involved 50 minutes of alcohol education each day for 4 weeks. Students completed assessment instruments before and after the TGT program. The instruments collected information about knowledge of alcohol, attitudes about alcohol use, motivation and peer influence to drink, attitudes toward external control of alcohol consumption, knowledge of consequences of alcohol abuse, discord in family relations, current alcohol use, and current problem drinking behavior. Results revealed that the changes that occurred throughout the intervention were maintained and that students and teachers both liked the approach. Findings indicated that TGT is a useful approach for teaching adolescents about alcohol and driving. However, efforts are needed to address the program's lack of impact on perceptions of consequences for driving under the influence of alcohol. Figures and 36 references
