These five articles and an editorial examine issues related to child sexual abuse, attitudes and recidivism among sex offenders, and voluntary castration for sex offenders.
Abstract
The editorial argues that objections to voluntary castration are similar in some cases to compulsory castration but encompass societal as well as personal concerns. It concludes that castration represents a personal foul not worth the message it carries, which is that an act of violence is needed to stanch aggression and that revenge is civilization's sanctioned response to criminal acts. The clinical and research articles present findings regarding the static and dynamic predictors of recidivism in sex offenders and compare daily stress, coping, problem behavior, and cognitive distortions in juvenile sex offenders and conduct-disordered adolescents. Additional articles examine incarcerated child molesters' perceptions of themselves and others, sexual offenders' perceptions of their intimate relationships, and a discussion of a well-documented case of child pornography in a child care center known as Alicia's Preschool.
