Requested by the Oklahoma City Public Schools following the Oklahoma City bombing, this series of lessons is designed to help teachers guide students into positive learning experiences in relation to this act of domestic terrorism.
Abstract
The student materials consist of nine lessons that can be used in any order. The first lesson presents an overview of the Oklahoma City bombing and some issues raised by it. The next seven lessons are grouped in three issue areas: responses to terrorism, free-speech issues, and the prevalence of conspiracy theories in American society. A guide for each lesson contains a content overview, suggested outside resource persons, focus activity, reading and discussion, activities, debriefing (closure for the lesson), and additional optional activities. The first eight lessons cover a range of issues appropriate for social studies classes. The final lesson sequence can be used by teachers in all curriculum areas. It models a civic participation process that encourages students to take a hands-on approach to addressing community problems. Students plan, implement, and evaluate projects with goals such as promoting tolerance or preventing violence.
