The book examines youth suicide and homicide in context and patterns in the literature. It integrates epidemiological and clinical perspectives and explores the relationship between suicide and homicide. Chapters on epidemiologic and demographic patterns in the United States include economic variables, nonmortality measures and cohort analyses. The book compares suicide and homicide in 20 countries and looks more closely at demographic variables in selected countries. It considers demographic issues in prevention and intervention and presents a synthesis of strategies that emphasizes four major issues: (1) gun control; (2) public education; (3) training of professionals, including physicians, social workers, clergy, police, emergency room personnel, and teachers; and (4) research.
