Abstract
Three papers in the introductory section provide a broad philosophical framework for exploring a wide range of social and criminal justice issues. The section on policing includes two new selections in this second edition. One is an experimental piece on teaching police officers about ethical dilemmas. The second examines whether police officers need a code of ethics. A paper on reforming plea bargaining has been added to the section on ethics and the courts, in addition to papers on the ethics of attorneys in an adversarial system and an analysis of why prosecutors act unethically. Ethical issues in sentencing are also addressed in the section on ethics and the courts. A paper on shame, forgiveness, and juvenile justice has been added to the correctional-issues section. Other papers in the corrections section pertain to prison corruption and its control, as well as ethical issues in probation and parole. Remaining sections consider ethical issues in criminal justice research, ethics and crime control policy, and a criminal justice ethic for the future. A student study guide/workbook accompanies the text. It includes learning objectives, chapter summaries, objective practice questions, case scenarios, and quiz questions, as well as several discussion questions keyed to each chapter to stimulate class discussion.
