This article reports on the results of the field test of a substance abuse treatment protocol for training probation and parole officers.
Abstract
Ten probation and parole officers (PPOs) from six offices in western Ontario were trained in Structured Relapse Prevention (SRP) and offered treatment to 55 clients over a 1-year field test period. The report highlights the incentives and barriers for providing substance abuse treatment in the corrections setting. It proposes that this type of field test is an effective dissemination technique for encouraging system engagement because it allows for modification of the treatment protocol to better fit the probation and parole context, and the field test's positive results serve as the basis to justify dissemination of SRP to probation and parole officers province wide. Overall, PPOs were enthusiastic about SRP, in spite of its added time demands. Clients indicated that SRP helped them with their alcohol and drug problems, and both PPOs and clients found SRP to be a good fit for the probation and parole context. References
