Abstract
A person is guilty of burglary if he or she enters any building as a trespasser intending to steal, cause damage, inflict grievous bodily harm or commit rape. The booklet contains practical advice about what retailers can do to deter and prevent burglars from breaking into their premises, including teaching their staffs good security practices and working closely with the local crime prevention officer. In addition, the following physical security measures can help deter crime: (1) Remove high- value goods from window displays; (2) Hide stock by boarding or whitewashing windows; (3) Leave the till visible, open and clearly empty; (4) Reduce stock by introducing "just in time" deliveries of stock, and catalog or home delivery of merchandise sold; (5) Do not leave cash in the store overnight; (6) Use dummy goods that are clearly fake; (7) Strengthen potential entrances, grills and shutters; (8) Use glass film or laminated glass; (9) Invest in good quality safes, vehicle traps, intruder alarms, surveillance equipment, and lighting.
