This document was prepared to inform regional preparatory meetings on six research and demonstration workshops included in the work program of the Ninth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders.
Abstract
The workshops were intended to facilitate more effective action in the prevention of crime and victimization and in the area of criminal justice reform, and they recognized the need for international cooperation to successfully prevent and control transnational crime. Workshop participants were invited to share their experiences and to present information on existing or planned research projects. The six workshops focused on: (1) extradition and international cooperation--the implementation of extradition principles in national legislation; (2) mass media and crime prevention; (3) urban policy and crime prevention; (4) violent crime prevention; (5) environmental protection at national and international levels--potentials and limits of criminal justice; and (6) international cooperation and assistance in criminal justice system management--computerization of criminal justice operations and the development, analysis, and policy use of criminal justice information. Plenary sessions were also held to discuss experiences and practical measures aimed at dealing with corruption involving public officials. An appendix contains a draft International Code of Conduct for Public Officials. 24 references
