Title: Women's Rights: Human Rights
Editor(s): A Yotopoulos-Marangopoulos
Date Published: 1994
Annotation: This collection of articles focuses on women's rights issues and stresses principles adopted by the Declaration and Programme of Action of the Vienna International Conference on Human Rights (VICHR).
Abstract: Women are subject to different socioeconomic and cultural conditions than men and face special obstacles to their enjoyment of the same rights as men on an equal footing. Consequently, special measures are necessary to neutralize the difficulties that create inequalities at women's expense in all walks of life. The VICHR recognizes the rights of women and acknowledges the human rights of women and female children are an inalienable, integral, and indivisible part of universal human rights. Despite some progress for women, inequalities still exist in many fields, such as education, employment, and pornography. The articles emphasize the importance of gender equality in contemporary democracies, the professional advancement of women, equal status of men and women, the enforcement of women's international human rights, reproductive freedom, and censorship. Appendixes provide additional information on the elimination of sexism from language and on the sexual exploitation of children and young adults. Footnotes and photographs
