This report profiles offenders incarcerated in secure facilities, places in community corrections programs, and supervised on parole by the Colorado Department of Corrections during fiscal year 1996.
Abstract
The report also provides information on juvenile offenders sentenced as adults to the Youthful Offender System. The statistics cover sentencing trends; technical prison returns; lengths of stay for releases; and initial treatment need levels in the areas of mental health, medical, sex offender, and drug and alcohol for court commitments to prison. The discussion notes that the average daily population under the jurisdiction of the Colorado Department of Corrections totaled 14,153 offenders during the year. The average inmate population was 11,019, the total parole population averaged 2,969, and the population of the Youthful Offender System averaged 165. The correctional population increased nearly 31 percent over the five year period from fiscal years 1992 through 1996, for an annual increase of 7.7 percent. Changes in sentencing laws have significantly affected the prison population since 1980. Figures and tables
