Abstract
The book's six sections provide a broad overview of some of the most important issues facing the American justice system and what to expect in the future. (1) Eight readings on crime in America cover both the nature and extent of crime, specific crime problems, and the causes of urban crime and violence; (2) Five articles on policing cover community problem-oriented policing as well as the use of deadly force and its control; (3) The court system is represented by articles on the role of prosecutors and defense attorneys, a look at the emerging courts movement, and an article on the international use of the death penalty; (4) The unit on corrections discusses alternative sanctions such as boot camps and home confinement as well as community corrections and secure confinements; (5) The unit on juvenile justice considers both the present and the future of juvenile justice; and (6) Other articles discuss coming changes in a variety of institutions ranging from organized crime to probation.
