This volume presents the papers from the winter and summer 1996 conferences of the American Correctional Association; the conferences focused on reducing crime through programs that are effective and issues related to political realities versus responsible justice.
Abstract
Individual papers focused on innovative approaches in long-range planning; public involvement, political realities, and correctional policies; the creation of a safe work setting in corrections through attitude and preparedness; and the use of technology in corrections. Additional papers focused on life skills development for juvenile offenders, effective job placement for probationers and parolees, correctional personnel training, and accelerated release as an option for dealing with prison crowding. Further papers focused on responsible versus responsive justice, juvenile justice policies, health care in corrections, managing diversity in the correctional workplace, effective treatment programs, and the effects of a college education for corrections and criminal justice practitioners. Other papers focused on treatment, aftercare, and case management; correctional industries and the therapeutic community; the training of wardens and superintendents; effective initiatives for adult and juvenile female offenders; the implementation of house arrest programs; and domestic homicide.
