Abstract
The papers on issues of selection present findings from an exploratory study of police recruits in a southern city, the issues of physical agility from a historical and legal perspective, and the essential functions of a police officer's job and the accommodations police agencies can make to address the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The papers on education and training examine course content and instructional methodology in State police training, the influence of race and gender on rookie evaluations of their field training officers, and police perceptions of education as an entitlement to promotion. The final section focuses on the impact that different belief systems might have on police, the role of selected sociodemographic and job-specific variables in predicting patrol officer satisfaction, factors that can reduce injuries and the use of excessive force, and health-related problems linked to the mortality of police officers.
