This volume describes the anti-bullying program that was one of 10 programs selected nationally as meeting a high scientific standard of effectiveness and that could provide a nucleus for a national violence prevention initiative.
Abstract
The bullying prevention program aims to reduce the victim/bully problems among elementary and secondary school students. It aims to increase awareness of the problem and knowledge about it; to achieve active involvement on the part of teachers and parents; to develop clear rules against bullying behavior; and to provide victims with support and protection. Intervention occurs at the school level, the class level and the individual level. School components include an anonymous student questionnaire assessing the nature and prevalence of bulling at each school, a school conference day, the formation of a coordinating committee, and the development of a system for supervising students during break periods. Classroom components including establishing and enforcing classroom rules, holding regular classroom meetings, and holding parent meetings. Individual components include interventions with children who are bullies and victims and discussions with their parents. Discussion of other selected programs and the methods used, figures, charts, appended resources and materials, and 69 references
