Federal funding recommended for fiscal year 2000 totals $17.8 billion, an increase of $735 million (4.3 percent) over fiscal year 1999. Major increases in drug control funding target drug intervention, youth tobacco prevention, treatment capacity expansion grants, substance abuse block grants, school coordinators, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, and drug courts. Major increases in drug control funding are also directed at supply reduction programs, specifically the southwest border region, international programs, Drug Enforcement Agency drug intelligence, forward operating locations of the Department of Defense, and community-oriented policing services. Federal funding priorities for fiscal years 2000 to 2004 are identified, the PME system is described, and methodological changes affecting the drug control budget are noted.
