Abstract
The volume focuses on a systems perspective and the conflict between concerns for due process and concerns for crime control. Four chapters set the context for studying criminal justice, 10 chapters are devoted to analyzing the justice process, and the final chapter looks to the future. The last chapter examines discharge; collateral consequences of conviction, restoration of rights; defining recidivism and relating it to criminal justice policy; due process, crime control and private justice, and technology and criminal justice in the total system; and criminal justice in the early 21st century. Style and vocabulary have been keyed to the reading level of the typical college freshman, and the book contains review questions.
