This article discusses techniques for investigating computer-related crime.
Abstract
An estimated 88 percent of computer crimes in large companies go unreported because of victim companies' concern over adverse publicity. The following cases are typical of computer-related crimes that have been reported: (1) unauthorized access and mischief to data, including insertion of viruses; (2) economic terrorism, such as blackmail of institutions into paying huge sums of money to avoid threatened destruction or damage to their computer systems; (3) information warfare for political aims; (4) theft of computer components; and (5) child pornography on the Internet. The article presents a hypothetical case of computer-system tampering that affects Federal Government communications, the Internet Service Provider, financial markets, a software company, and residents and law enforcement agencies of domestic and foreign jurisdictions. It includes suggestions on dealing successfully with such a scenario. References
