This fact sheet explains the program and eligibility requirements related to the Federal funds available under the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act of 1998, which aims to protect the lives of law enforcement officers by helping States and units of local and tribal governments equip their police officers with armor vests.
Abstract
An applicant may request funds to help purchase one bulletproof vest per police officer per fiscal year. The entire application and payment process for the program will occur through the Internet. Eligible applicants will be able to register at the program's Web site starting in mid-March 1999. Applicants can read online about vest models that meet National Institute of Justice standards for armor vests and can link to vendors of vests. At least half of the $25 million in funds disbursed through the program must go to units of government serving fewer than 100,000 residents. Each applicant must match at least 50 percent of the cost of its order. Additional guidelines and telephone numbers and Web site address from which to obtain more information
