Alaska experienced a decrease in the total number of both property and violent crimes; the total number of offenses declines by 6.2 percent and the crime rate declined by 5.6 percent from the year before. A total of 13.6 percent of the total crimes were violent crimes and 86.4 percent of the crimes were property crimes. The 45 murders represented 1.1 percent of the violent crime and 0.1 percent of the total crime index offenses; the number of murders declined 18.2 percent from 1995. Rapes declined by 22.9 percent and robberies by 26.7 percent. Aggravated assaults declined slightly, burglaries decreased by 1.3 percent, larceny-theft decreased by more than 5 percent, and motor vehicle thefts decreased by 15 percent.
