The project analyzed a data set of 2,671 responses collected from 1991 through 1995 at the Eddie Warrior women's correctional facility. Most of the inmates were in prison for the first time and were serving relatively short sentences, mostly for either a drug-related offense or an economic (or property) crime. The respondents tended to be non-married, black or white, more than 30 years of age, with low levels of education and training. Most were mothers, typically having their first child at a young age (60 percent were 18 or younger). The inmates reported significant use of drugs, including alcohol, marijuana and cocaine, and considerable experience with physical and sexual abuse. They illustrated considerable personal, family and social disorganization. Seventy-five percent of the women said that drug and alcohol treatment programs had been the most helpful of the eight programs available at the facility.
