This study constructed a profile of murderers who escaped from the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, as differentiated from similar murderers who did not escape. The intention was to distinguish the variables associated with escape/non-escape and use them in classification procedures for screening out likely escapees. Descriptive analyses of 35 murderer escapees covered: Conviction, Sentence, Race, Age at Reception, Age at Escape, Opportunity of Escape, Outside Help, Companionship in Escape, Planning in Escape, Triggering Event, Prior Escapes, Victims During Escape, and Time at Large. Characteristics that distinguished escapees from non-escapees included: (1) having been raised in neglectful, abusive and criminal families; (2) a longer juvenile record; (3) a chronic substance abuse problem; (4) a longer criminal record; (5) more prison misconduct; (6) low prison evaluations; (7) low family and community support; and (8) low support from the prison staff.
