The book is divided into four sections. Part One presents works that provide some background into radical assumptions and theory as well as into some of the debates which radicals have among themselves. The five chapters in this section cover primarily Marxist theory and criminology. Part Two features some contemporary areas into which radical criminology has expanded in recent years. Seven chapters discuss, among other topics, new metaphors for understanding violence; the media, intellectuals, and crime; and women, crime, feminism and realism. Part Three includes some empirical examinations of radically situated theory and hypotheses, including punishment and social structure at the state level; economic cycles and punishment; and the extraction of surplus value, crime and punishment. Part Four includes a variety of studies that either illustrate substantive issues or use qualitative data, including aerobiology and the war on drugs, the political economy of the Gulf War; and the dialectics of criminalization, decriminalization and victimization. A separate section reviews some of the subjects omitted from the book and suggests some relevant materials to consult. References, notes, figures, tables, appendix, index
