Abstract
The first of eight papers addresses the administrative factors that are crucial in the treatment of offenders with mental illness. The paper is organized around where the services are provided, rather than the clinical or legal status of the people served, reflecting the authors' belief that the setting itself has the largest impact on the lives of the patients. A paper on the legal aspects of the treatment of offenders with mental disorders reviews the evolution of the law pertinent to mentally ill offenders before focusing on relevant current law. The third paper addresses inpatient treatment of mentally disordered offenders, as it discusses the criminal justice process, models of service delivery, management and treatment, the treatment process, and discharge planning and outcome. Community-based forensic treatment of mentally ill offenders is considered in the fourth paper, with attention to what is known about such programs and those they treat, what broader principles apply to this specialized form of treatment, how research might be improved, and the implications that may be drawn from the current literature. Remaining papers focus on the treatment of mentally ill inmates in jails and prisons, the treatment of mentally disordered sexual offenders, the treatment of offenders with mental retardation, and treatment of the emotionally disturbed juvenile offender.
